Nutrition

SARD is implementing the Nutrition Program to develop and promote policies and institutions for food and nutrition security, universal human and environmental health, peace and human rights for community development. Through the support of UNICEF, SARD is implementing nutrition project – prevention and treatment of severe acute malnutrition and moderate acute malnutrition through the EAC approach in children under 5 and Pregnant and Lactating Women in Bur-Hakaba district, Bay Region targeting 5 villages in Burhakaba district The project objective is to improve the nutritional status of children under five and women in childbearing age in Burhakaba district with community and facility based nutrition interventions. The project has saved 5,164 lives of children under the age of five. There is notable rapid changes in health behaviors i.e. exclusive breastfeeding to six months more than doubled, hand washing increased. The ORS preparation for diarrhea treatment increased and the number of mothers who could recognize three or more signs of childhood illness tripled.

Food Security / Livelihood / Economic Development

This program’s aim is to develop sustainable production, access and consumption of adequate food and nutrients along with the livestock, crop and fisheries value chains in an inclusive manner.

SARD is promoting universal education of the population through increasing access to basic education among school-going age categories, developing informal adult education programs and vocational training for the people in the productive age category. Under universal education, SARD is seeking partnership for; Rehabilitation and development of education infrastructure, Capacity building of teachers, Supply of educational materials and Motivational and incentive systems for teachers

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

With the help of UNICEF and OCHA SARD constructed and rehabilitated shallow wells, boreholes and latrines for rural communities and IDPs in camps. These activities were complemented with community awareness raising, training, education on good hygiene and sanitation practices. A total of 22,310 households benefited from these projects.
